Untitled (handsome)

This image comes in and out of focus. From across the room, a pattern, or a constellation. Closer, a shift to representation. I’ve been collecting cabinet card portraits of individual men since 1997. Albumen prints were mounted on thick card stock, and when displayed on the cabinet ledge, were visible from across the parlor. This ongoing piece originates from staying in the studio during the pandemic. This interpretation builds off the original tones, merging them into a chorus of gestures. The alluring images allow me to long for an impossible relationship with these people from the past.

I’ve been collecting cabinet card portraits of individual men since 1997. Albumen prints were mounted on thick card stock, and when displayed on the cabinet ledge, were visible from across the parlor. The challenge of identifying these men’s race and social standing is very important to me, particularly when seen in a multitude, as in this installation.
