My Darling Sweetheart, 1991
Installation piece at the Intersection For The Arts (space on Valencia) 1991
The solo exhibition consisted of seven Heart Boxes—sculptural light boxes—and seven draped gelatin-silver prints. The boxes were hung inside a constructed room within the gallery space that featured red satin walls and a platform surrounded by a pool of “blood.” In the outer gallery space, surrounding the constructed room, the framed gelatin-silver print images were draped with red velvet curtains which had to be parted in order to see the image. The images depicted nude male bodies in a sensual way, with no faces or identity. The primary intent of the exhibition lies in the contrast between the title of the installation piece and the experience of viewing it. The external space presents a sensual gaze upon the male form, which is then set in opposition to the internal space, where the boxed hearts evoke a sense of anguish.
